The story of the Titan of Oceangate , the submarine that disappeared while exploring the Titanic, will be adapted into a film.
Clearly, the story of the Titanic will never leave the screens. While James Cameron’s famous masterpiece shocked the world in 1997, his film Titanic revived interest in the wreck. So much so that a form of tourism reserved for scientists (and millionaires given the price) was gradually set up to approach the boat at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
And unfortunately, in June 2023, the Oceangate submarine, Titan, imploded beneath the depths, costing the lives of five people, as rescuers discovered after several days of intensive search. If we knew that a documentary on the submarine was already ready, we could imagine that Hollywood would take up the subject. On the other hand, we didn’t think it would be so quickly since a fiction project is now under development.
TITANIC 2
The production company MindRiot Entertainment did not waste its time following the disaster, since it has already released the documentary series Salvaged , which deals with this dark affair. And she doesn’t plan to stop there since a fiction film is now on track , with E. Brian Dobbins ( The Blackening , Black-ish ) co-producing. MindRiot’s Justin McGregor and Jonathan Keasey will co-write the film. The plot should take place before, during and after the disaster.
However, we do not know whether this work will focus on a particular person or not. We imagine that the plot will in any case not remain focused solely on the victims, if the story must continue after their death. Keasey, who was a licensed attorney before becoming a filmmaker, describes the importance of the project this way:
“The Titan tragedy is yet another example of a system that is misinformed and moves too quickly, in this case our non-stop, 24/7 media cycle that condemns and ruins the lives of so many people without any real procedure.
Our film will not only honor all those involved in the submersible tragedy and their families, but it will also serve as a vessel that will also address a larger concern about the nature of today’s media. […] The truth is all that matters. And the world has the right to know the truth, always, not the salacious bait shoved down our throats by those seeking their five minutes of fame.”
The producers therefore seem to have a fairly laudable intention in wanting, a priori, to denounce this type of practice in this future film. Despite everything, it is difficult not to detect a very uncomfortable form of opportunism, when the tragedy is still so recent. This project therefore raises a lot of ethical questions. In any case, the project has only just been announced and is still very vague. The company MindRiot is also planning a project on Seattle’s underground rap scene , this is a much less risky subject that is more likely to see the light of day.
