We're at a standstill: Bad news for Fantastic Beasts 4 and 5.

While a fourth and fifth films had been mentioned, the “Fantastic Beasts” saga would be at a standstill according to director .

Fantastic Beasts , not on the level of

If the Harry Potter sagawas an undeniable success at the box office, this is less the case with Fantastic Beasts , which shares the same universe. As a reminder, Fantastic Beasts is originally a short guide book which lists fantastic creatures and written by the character Norbert  . From there,  imagined a series of films, the first of which was released in 2016. With more than $814 million in global box office revenue , the idea seemed wise.

In 2018, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald grossed over $654 million. A significant amount, but much less than the previous film. Next came Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets , in 2022, which only managed to gross just over $405 million on a budget of $200 million . This is the lowest box office for films in the Harry Potter universe .

A break is needed according to David Yates

Despite this, other films were still being considered. A fourth and a fifth to be exact. Except that this no longer seems to be the case according to David Yates , director of the Fantastic Beasts films . In an interview given to  , the filmmaker indicated that the saga is at a standstill . Saying he is proud of what has been done with the third film, despite the pandemic, he explains the need to “ take a break ”.

With Fantastic Beasts, we are at a standstill. We shot these three films, the last one during the pandemic, and it was a lot of fun, but also very difficult. We filmed when there was no vaccine. Fortunately, no one got sick, but we had serious protocols in place. We are all very proud of (Fantastic Beasts 3) and after it released into the world, we needed to stop, take a break and rest.

A break then, at least for David Yates. Because Warner Bros. had mentioned his desire to make five films, without consulting David Yates on this subject.

The idea that there would be five films surprised many of us. (JK Rowling) mentioned it spontaneously during a press screening. But no one told us there would be five films when we committed to the first one.

The future of the saga therefore remains unclear, even if the director only speaks of a “pause” while wanting to be positive about the situation, because it ” allows him to do other things “, like Merchants of Pain , available on . There have currently been no discussions about a sequel to Fantastic Beasts , but David Yates says he is ” sure that at some point (they will return) .” Not enough to reassure fans who would have liked to see more of Norbert Scamander and his companions. Especially with the Harry Potter series going into production
